Who we are
Genetic Pathology Australasia (GPA) is a not-for-profit, member-led network of genetic pathologists across Australasia.
Our members are medical practitioners who have undertaken specialist training in genomic laboratory medicine and who work across a diverse range of clinical, laboratory, academic, and leadership settings. Together, they bring broad experience in the interpretation, oversight, and delivery of genetic and genomic testing, and in supporting the integration of genomics into high-quality patient care.
Our purpose
Genetic pathology plays an essential role in modern medicine, and that role is becoming more important as genetic and genomic testing expands across healthcare. In a fast-changing clinical, technological, and policy environment, there is a need for a clear, informed, and professionally grounded voice from within the specialty itself.
GPA exists to provide that voice. We support members in their professional practice, promote high standards in the field, and advocate for genetic and genomic testing that is equitable, scientifically rigorous, and clinically useful. We also contribute to broader professional and public discussions about genomic medicine, both independently and in collaboration with other organisations in this space.
What we do
GPA focuses on five essentials.
Advocacy
We advocate for both the profession of genetic pathology and the interests of the patients we serve, through policy submissions, position statements, and engagement with governments, regulators, and other stakeholders.
Professional support
We develop and share practical resources that help members in practice, including guidelines, templates, checklists, reporting tools, and validation frameworks.
Knowledge sharing
We promote education, continuous improvement, and exchange of expertise through literature updates, issue briefs, and discussion of emerging topics in genomic pathology.
Community
We build a professional network that supports collegiality, mentorship, well-being, and shared problem-solving across the specialty.
Integrity and independence
We are committed to being transparent, evidence-based, ethical, and member-led in all of our activities.
